The Kindness of Strangers: The Way a Gentleman I Barely Knew Assisted Me Secure the Position That Altered My Path

In the late 1980s, I set out on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a friend. Since my friend was interested in enrolling in graduate studies in the Big Apple, we had booked a two-week stay there en route to London.

We got to the student accommodation, a large multi-story edifice on the UWS called International House. Once we unpacked, we headed straight to the cafeteria, where we picked up meals, sat down, and began chatting with fellow residents.

Sitting next to me was an gentleman from Iraq pursuing an engineering degree at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I did for a living, and I shared that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been working on studies using an electron microscope.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at Columbia University – close to the school of engineering, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He proposed that I consider applying for a job with them. I laughed it off, explaining that I was heading off to Europe and, more critically, I didn’t have a US visa.

A day later I toured the city, going back to the cafeteria that evening. The Iraqi student approached me and told me that he had set up a meeting for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Given that he had taken the effort, I went to the meeting – but straight off informed my host that I didn’t have a visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

As is common in NYC – a city where opportunities abound – she declared: “That can be arranged. How soon can you begin?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a master’s of international affairs.

I lost touch with him and I can't recall his full name, but his remarkable generosity transformed my future in multiple respects. I would never have had the bravery or nerve to contact anyone at an elite institution and seek a position. Additionally, I had always wanted to take classes in another country, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that free tuition.

Critically, that role at the university resulted in a job in Zurich where I encountered my beautiful French husband, with whom I am raising four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person redirected my path in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
