Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users buying such medications should be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally see a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs explains the accelerated weight return.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the medication describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is higher among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success relies on combined behavioural support.
